Super Bowl Sunday is Finally Here!!

Time to get your bar game on!

It’s Super Bowl Sunday and we’re ready to party with all our football enthusiast friends!  And, even if you’re not a football enthusiast, it’s a great reason to throw a fun party at home.  Since it’s the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl, we feel it’s only appropriate to celebrate with a throw-back party using vintage barware and glassware from the 1960s.  And we’ve got some great ideas for you to catch!  Here’s our game day line-up:

For our Denver Broncos fans, we’ve put together an assortment of festive orange barware, including a 1960’s funky faux leather wrap tray, rocks glasses and matching decanter and a set of Tiara Horn beer glasses made by Indiana Glass.  We’re serving Colorado-based Blue Moon Belgian White Ale and an old fashioned made with Colorado’s own Breckenridge Bourbon and Hella Bitters Orange Bitters.

Our Carolina Panthers fans will be so pleased when we serve them out of Carolina blue vintage Georges Briard rocks and collins glasses.  We’ll mix up a batch of Carolina-made White Whale’s Mob Man cocktails using Carolina’s own Defiant Whisky in our swanky 1960s Gorham silver plate pitcher.  For our Carolina beer fans, we’re serving Carolina brewed Oskar Blues Dale’s Pale Ale.  Our vintage formica and silver plate tray will kick these drinks into the end zone!

For all our friends whose teams did not make it into the Super Bowl this year, do not fret.  We’re tossing a great serving set your way!  In honor of our local Washington Redskins, we’re serving up local spirits and beer.  On our black Pacific Connections tray, you’ll find a fantastic Georges Briard football ice bucket to scoop up some ice for your vintage football tumbler and make a One Eight Distillery Rock Creek White Whiskey old fashioned using Bitters Tears (pun intended) Peppercorn Bacon Bitters.  For our local beer lovers, we couldn’t help but serve up Alexandria-based Port City Monumental IPA in vintage “I Bet I Can” pilsner glasses.  And we bet your team can make it to the playoffs next year!

Introducing The Hour’s customers to the wonderful world of holiday cocktails using Italian liqueurs!

Last night we held our 6th annual holiday cocktail party  here at The Hour.  It was truly wonderful seeing so many familiar faces and growing number of friends.  Our co-hosts for the evening were artisanal spirits maker Don Ciccio & Figli and one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants, Vermilion.  Vermilion’s fabulous Lindsay Parsons was our guest bartender for the night.  Lindsay concocted 4 delicious tastings for the evening featuring Don Ciccio’s Italian liqueurs and a variety of spirits from local distiller Catoctin Creek.

Jonathan Fasano of Don Ciccio & Figli was on hand to provide tastings of 4 of his company’s wonderful apertifs and digestifs.  The 4 we tasted last night were the Nocino (a green walnut, cinnamon and clove liqueur), their Cinque (a bitter orange and botanical aperitivo), a delicious Finocchietto (a liqueur infused with fennel, herbs and spices) and their barrel aged Amaro delle Sirene (a traditional Italian inspired bitter liqueur).  These 4 liqueurs provided the inspiration for our 4 holiday cocktails this year.

We started the evening off toasting our holiday guests with the Nutty In-Laws.  We always love to greet our guests with a punch, especially one served in a beautiful vintage silver plate punch bowl like this mid-century one by Towle.  Our evening’s eggnog punch contained 1757 Brandy, Don Ciccio’s Nocino and Fee Brothers Black Walnut bitters.  Simple and simply delicious!

Second up last night was Lindsay’s Lights on the Boulevard cocktail.  We had fun showing off some of our vintage barware as the evening progressed.  Many of our guests had never seen the vintage Napier Press & Release jigger in action.  It truly is a wonderful jigger to behold as the spirits are released from the bottom of the jigger as the handle is pressed in.  This wonderful cocktail tasting included Catoctin Creek’s Roundstone Rye, Don Ciccio’s Cinque and Cocchi (sweet vermouth).

Who Needs Mistletoe? was our third cocktail tasting for the evening.  This delectable cocktail included Catoctin Creek’s Watershed Gin, Don Ciccio’s Finocietto, Dolin Blanc, lemon and a splash of brut riesling.  I’m not sure any of us needed mistletoe after this tasting!

Finally, Lindsay ended the fun holiday night with Baby, It’s Cold Outside.  This nightcap tasting included Catoctin Creek’s Roundstone Rye, Don Ciccio’s Amaro de Sirene, fresh grapefruit and Cocchi.  It truly was a fun, festive and wonderful night shared with so many friends of the store.  Stay tuned for more party pics… you might see yourself or someone you know!

Hospitality is the Heart of the Holidays

Gather Your Group!

Open your home with hospitality this holiday season!

Today I read a great article in the Food section of the Washington Post written by M. Carrie Allen, the Post’s spirits columnist.  In her article, Allen extols the virtues of bartenders who go beyond mixing great drinks by providing a warm, friendly and inviting atmosphere in their bars.  I couldn’t agree more.

For me, this atmosphere of hospitality during the holidays is even more relevant when talking about entertaining at home.  As a kid, one of my favorite memories during the holiday season centered on the cocktail hour before dinner.  While Mom prepared our holiday feast, Dad would prepare cocktails for all our house guests, including the kids.  For the adults, Dad would have a simply stocked bar and always featured his Martinis and Manhattans.  For those of us under the drinking age, Dad made simple Shirley Temples and served them using my Mother’s etched stemware.  Everyone felt so special.  It’s a memory I simply will never forget.

These memories are, in part, why I created the idea of a “cocktail store” and opened The Hour (nearly 7 years ago).  I wanted to bring back that special feeling when welcoming guests into your home.  For me, the 20th Century truly was a time when home entertaining was at its finest.  Barware and glassware was at its finest as well.  Cocktails were served with panache, often out of small glasses so that hosts and hostesses would have to interact with their guests as they refilled their drinks.  Glassware was either etched or adorned in silver, gold or colorful patterns.  By the 1970s, most of the companies that produced an astonishing array of cocktail ware here in America were gone.  And gone too were all the molds and creative talent behind them.

Luckily, with the turn of this century, the cocktail movement has returned and, with it, a renewed interest in entertaining at home.   Because of their exceptional qualities, vintage barware and glassware is increasingly becoming a big part of it.  While new cocktail ware can be nice, we think vintage is special as it is a direct link to America’s golden age of hospitality and home entertaining.  Your guests will appreciate the thought and care you put into making memorable occasions when you treat them using unique vintage cocktail ware.

To help you with your holiday gatherings this year, we’ve got some great ideas:

Our 6 Year Garden Cocktail Party!

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Delightful weather, delicious cocktails and good friends!!

To celebrate our 6th year anniversary, we threw our first garden cocktail party!  We had so much fun and enjoyed delicious cocktails made by Catoctin Creek’s brand ambassador Chad Robinson (one of our first loyal customers… it was great to see him behind our bar!) and refreshing mocktails by Element Shrub’s owner Charlie Berkinshaw.

We couldn’t have asked for better weather.  And it was great to celebrate 6 years of business with our friends, family and loyal customers.  For those of you who couldn’t attend, here are the cocktails we enjoyed:

Quoit Punch

12 lemons (for peels and juice)

2 cups sugar, raw & fine-grained

750 ml 92 Proof Catoctin Creek Rye

750 ml Virginia Brandy

750 ml madeira (preferably verdehlo)

In a large bowl, add sugar and the peels of 12 lemons.  Rub together to release the citrus oils into the sugar (this is called oleo-saccharum).  Let sit for an hour to infuse thoroughly.  Juice as many lemons as needed to obtain 16 ounces of lemon juice, and strain.  Add to the oleo-saccharum and stir until dissolved.  Add the rye, brandy and madiera and stir.  Pour into a punch bowl one-third filled with ice and let cool.  Yields 12 cups, serving 18-20.

The Sixth Hour

1.5 oz. Catoctin Creek Watershed Gin

1.5 oz. dry vermouth

0.25 oz. Element lemon mint shrub

2-3 dashes Bittercube Trinity Bitters

Add ingredients to a mixing glass and stir until cold.  Strain into a chilled martini glass or coupe.

El Cardenal

2 oz. Catoctin Creek Mosby’s Spirit

1 oz. lime juice

4 oz. Jarritos grapefruit soda

2-3 dashes Scrappy’s Grapefruit Bitters

Mix all the ingredients in a highball glass filled with ice and stir.

Cheers to our first six years!
